When Laura and I (Francis) moved to Carlton we embarked on a journey to attempt to eat whole and unprocessed foods. We are still on that long journey as it is extremely difficult to go to any grocery store and avoid processed food. Bit by bit we’ve grown, raised, canned, and made more and more of what we eat on a daily basis.
Once we started getting a good amount of milk from our goats the doors opened to a whole new area of foods that we could create ourselves. Hard and soft cheeses and yogurt are much of what we make, but we plan to begin butter, sour cream and ice cream soon. And of course we replaced store bought pasteurized milk with our great tasting raw goats milk.
Now, I think that there are many great advantages to drinking raw milk. Raw milk is a living product, like yogurt or kiefer, and contains many organisms that help or gut health, and help us digest the milk. People have been consuming raw milk for millennia and have only in recent history began to pasteurize it into a dead food. There is a lot of information and research about raw milk available on the internet, so I will leave that to you to reach your own conclusions.
Lastly, why goats milk? When we first decided to get goats for milking our thought was to provide milk for a future baby that we were planning on having. We chose goats because of their manageable size and also manageable amount of milk. Since then, our love for goats has only grown. We succeeded in supplying milk. for our now newborn, but also replacing all store bought milk in our family.
Unexpectedly we started producing way more milk than we could consume or make cheese out of. At that point I started searching for people who had a want or need for raw goats milk. Since then we’ve found a variety of people that get our milk for a wide range of reasons. Some get it just for the fun of it and many get it for health reasons. We have been excited to grow our community of goat milk lovers and would enjoy showing you and your family our hobby farm.
